PTE Core to CLB Calculator
Each CLB level matches a range of PTE Core scores that differs by skill: CLB 7, for example, is Speaking 68–75, Listening 60–70, Reading 60–68 and Writing 69–78.

The official IRCC chart
| CLB | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10+ | 89+ | 88+ | 90 | 89+ |
| CLB 9 | 82–88 | 78–87 | 88–89 | 84–88 |
| CLB 8 | 71–81 | 69–77 | 79–87 | 76–83 |
| CLB 7 | 60–70 | 60–68 | 69–78 | 68–75 |
| CLB 6 | 50–59 | 51–59 | 60–68 | 59–67 |
| CLB 5 | 39–49 | 42–50 | 51–59 | 51–58 |
| CLB 4 | 28–38 | 33–41 | 41–50 | 42–50 |
PTE Core, not PTE Academic
IRCC accepts PTE Core. PTE Academic isn't accepted for Express Entry, a PGWP or citizenship. Check the test name on your score report before you enter anything here.
PTE Core reports each skill from 10 to 90. The calculator only accepts whole numbers in that range.
Reading the ranges
The IELTS and CELPIP charts give one minimum per level. The PTE Core chart gives a range of scores for each CLB, and the ranges are different for every skill. Here is the middle of the chart:
| CLB | Speaking | Listening | Reading | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 84–88 | 82–88 | 78–87 | 88–89 |
| 8 | 76–83 | 71–81 | 69–77 | 79–87 |
| 7 | 68–75 | 60–70 | 60–68 | 69–78 |
| 6 | 59–67 | 50–59 | 51–59 | 60–68 |
Read across a row, not down a column. A score of 60 means different things in different skills: Listening 60 and Reading 60 are CLB 7, but Speaking 60 is CLB 6. One point can also cross a line. Reading 59 is CLB 6, and Reading 60 is CLB 7.
Writing needs 90 for CLB 10+
At the top of the chart, Speaking and Listening reach CLB 10+ at 89, and Reading at 88. Writing reaches CLB 10+ only at 90, the highest PTE Core score. Writing 88 and 89 are both CLB 9.
That matters for the CRS. Say your PTE Core scores are Speaking 89, Listening 89, Reading 88 and Writing 89. Three skills are CLB 10+ and Writing is CLB 9. Without a spouse or partner, that's 34 + 34 + 34 + 31 = 133 language points, three short of the maximum of 136.
Worked example: a CLB 7 result
Take Speaking 70, Listening 65, Reading 62 and Writing 72. Each score falls in its skill's CLB 7 range, so this is CLB 7 in all four skills.
- It meets the Federal Skilled Worker minimum of CLB 7 in all four.
- It meets the PGWP minimum for both university and college programs.
- Without a spouse or partner, it earns 17 CRS points per skill, or 68 in total.
To reach CLB 8 in every skill, this person would need at least Speaking 76, Listening 71, Reading 69 and Writing 79.
Compare with the other tests
Your CLB also appears as a score on CELPIP and IELTS. PTE Core Listening 82 to 88, for example, is CLB 9, the same as CELPIP Listening 9 or IELTS Listening 8.0. Try the CELPIP calculator or the IELTS calculator, or go back to the CLB calculator hub for program requirements. For how CLB levels affect your application, read CELPIP scores for Canadian immigration.
Frequently asked questions
Speaking 68 to 75, Listening 60 to 70, Reading 60 to 68 and Writing 69 to 78. Any score inside a skill's range is CLB 7 for that skill.
Speaking 84 to 88, Listening 82 to 88, Reading 78 to 87 and Writing 88 to 89. Higher scores in those skills are CLB 10+.
No. IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. A PTE Academic result can't be converted to CLB for Express Entry, PGWP or citizenship.
Yes. IRCC accepts PTE Core for citizenship, where the requirement is CLB 4 in speaking and listening for applicants aged 18 to 54. On PTE Core, that's Speaking 42 or more and Listening 28 or more.
Because IRCC's chart sets CLB 10+ for Writing at exactly 90, the top PTE Core score. Speaking and Listening reach CLB 10+ at 89, and Reading at 88.
Both are accepted for Express Entry, PGWP and citizenship, and both convert to the same CLB levels. CELPIP maps to CLB one-to-one, while PTE Core uses ranges. CELPIP also has a General LS version for citizenship only. Compare the formats before you book.
Based on IRCC's official tables. IRCC makes the final decision on your application. For Express Entry and PGWP, results must be less than 2 years old when you apply.
