CELPIP vs PTE Core: Which Test Should You Take for Canada?
An honest comparison of CELPIP-General and PTE Core for Canadian immigration: test length, how each is scored, how scores convert to CLB, results time and who each test suits.
The Celpip Plus team
Written and reviewed against the official CELPIP scoring criteria
CELPIP-General and PTE Core are both accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, a post-graduation work permit and citizenship. Both convert to the same Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. So the question isn't which test counts. It's which test suits the way you work.
Here's the short version:
- PTE Core is shorter: about 2 hours, against about 3 for CELPIP.
- CELPIP's scores are simpler: a CELPIP 7 is CLB 7. On PTE Core, each CLB level is a range on a 10–90 scale.
- PTE Core results come a little faster: usually within 2 business days, against 2 to 4 for CELPIP.
- The tasks feel different: CELPIP uses everyday Canadian situations with time to prepare. PTE Core moves faster, with many short tasks.

Scoring: one number or a range
This is the biggest practical difference.
On CELPIP, your score is your CLB level. A 7 in Writing is CLB 7 in Writing, so you always know exactly where you stand.
On PTE Core, each skill is scored from 10 to 90, and each CLB level covers a range of scores. The ranges differ by skill:
| CLB level | Speaking | Listening | Reading | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 7 | 68–75 | 60–70 | 60–68 | 69–78 |
| CLB 9 | 84–88 | 82–88 | 78–87 | 88–89 |
Notice the Writing range at CLB 9: only 88 or 89. And CLB 10+ in Writing needs a perfect 90. On CELPIP, the same level is a 10 or higher.
Neither system is harder. But if you like knowing your target as one clear number, CELPIP is easier to plan around. The CELPIP score chart shows the full CELPIP conversion.
How the tests feel
CELPIP is built around everyday life in Canada: emails to a landlord, advice to a friend, a conversation at work. Speaking has eight tasks, and each one gives you time to prepare before you record your answer. Writing has two tasks of 150–200 words, with about half an hour for each.
PTE Core is faster. It has many short tasks, and you move quickly from one to the next. Speaking and Writing come together in one part at the start. Some tasks count toward more than one skill, so a strong answer in one task can help two scores at once.
Ask yourself which pace suits you:
- If you think best with a little time to plan, CELPIP's prep timers help.
- If you're quick, comfortable with a computer, and like short tasks, PTE Core's pace may suit you.
How each test is marked
- CELPIP: Listening and Reading are marked by computer. Writing and Speaking are scored by trained raters against four criteria.
- PTE Core: Pearson uses an AI scoring engine, combined with human expertise, for all skills.
Both are designed to be fair. The difference matters mostly for Speaking. On CELPIP, a rater listens to how well you handled the task. On PTE Core, speaking smoothly and clearly, without long pauses, matters a great deal.
Cost
CELPIP-General costs $299 plus tax in Canada. PTE Core fees vary by country and test centre. Check Pearson's price finder on pearsonpte.com for the current fee near you before you book.
When PTE Core may suit you better
- You need results fast and can't wait the extra days or pay for Express Rating.
- You prefer a shorter test day.
- You're comfortable with quick, back-to-back computer tasks.
When CELPIP may suit you better
- You want your score to equal your CLB level, with no conversion ranges.
- You do better with time to prepare before you speak.
- You only need Listening and Speaking for citizenship. CELPIP-General LS covers just those two skills in a shorter test.
- You're aiming for CLB 10+ in Writing, where PTE Core needs a perfect 90.
The honest summary
Both tests are accepted for the same programs, so pick the one that suits you, not the one you hear is "easier". If you're unsure, try a practice test in each format. The one where your scores come out higher and you feel more in control is your answer.
