CLB stands for Canadian Language Benchmark. It is the scoring scale used by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to measure language ability. Most Express Entry PR pathways require CLB 7 or higher in all four skills. Missing by even half a band often means failing the language requirement entirely — which is why knowing your exact score before the exam matters.
It depends on your immigration pathway. Federal Skilled Worker requires CLB 7 in all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Canadian Experience Class requires CLB 7 for NOC TEER 0 or 1 jobs, or CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 jobs. Provincial Nominee Programs vary by province. Higher CLB scores also add Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, improving your Express Entry ranking.
CELPIP Writing is assessed on four criteria: Content/Coherence (relevance and logical flow), Vocabulary (range and accuracy of word choice), Readability (sentence variety and grammar), and Task Fulfillment (completing the task fully and at the right register — formal vs. informal). Each criterion is scored 1–12 and averaged to a final CELPIP score.
No, and conflating them is a common and expensive mistake. CELPIP reports a score from 1 to 12 for each skill. CLB is the separate benchmark scale immigration programs are written against. The two happen to line up closely at the levels most applicants need, but they are not the same scale and a CELPIP score is not a CLB level.
